Carswell's unexpected resignation and move to UKIP is a dream come true for David Cameron, but a dream of the worst kind. Citing unwillingness and disinterest on the part of the part of the government to be accountable to the electorate, he joins the UK Independence Party. What does this mean for the embattled Conservative Party?

Bad news for the Tories. First Sayeeda Warsi and now this bloke. I had never heard of Carswell.

If this causes more defectors and departures, it may well be the end of the Tory rule.

They're buffing up and dusting off Boris Johnson as we speak. This is going to get interesting. And I'm not normally that interested in politics!

I can understand Ukip's Clacton kicking up against the political move of moving Carswell in. I'd do the same. Except for joining Ukip then :)

I think the bottom-line message is that political parties do not, by definition, listen to the electorate any longer when the opinion of the voters goes against political interest. This polite contempt will be tolerated by the populace for as long as no viable alternatives are presented. The moment such an alternative appears, the parties will have defectors from the ranks of politicians and voters alike. Because this reality is inherently understood, I feel there is a marked lack of outrage at the recent turn of events.
