Should the voting age be lowered to 16 for the General Election?

It was a hugely successful move for the Scottish Referendum but would it work for the General Election? Would it help to politically engage the young people in the rest of the UK as it did Scotland? Would you trust a 16 year old to vote on the county's future? Is the difference between 16 and 18 year olds really that big these days? Have your say...

I'm in favour. Today's 16 year olds are more aware and informed than 18 year olds were 20 or 30 years ago. Some will wager that 16 year olds are not working and should therefore not weigh in. a number of them do work, and what is the guarantee of anyone over 18 working?

I think that is probably the most valid point. Physically, mentally & socially, whether good or bad, today's youth is at 16 where previous generations were at 18. By the way, it strikes me that today's teenagers, notwithstanding all the talk of this supposedly doomed, fickle and dysfunctional new cyber generation, are a rather functional lot. They get my vote.

Turnout would be low most kids care about girls/games & don't care about politics.

You'd be surprised there. As a 16 yr old you can do all sorts like get married, quit school & work, , join the army (don't bother), start a company, pay tax and more. So why not vote on your own future?

This has never crossed my mind, until just now with the Scottish referendum. Most 16 year olds would be very able to make an informed decision.

It's not going to happen however. Cameron has already ruled it out

i think if they leave it at 18.....it will keep voting enshrined as something special that you have to wait for

I think you're a bit naive at 16 to say the least.
