I'm sure you've followed the story of Brenda Leyland vs the McCann's, which resulted in sweepyface's untimely death. A sobering story, and cyber bullies, as they're called, pose a big problem. How should we respond, as a society, as individuals? TheSoapbox seems to be free from this problem so far, but sooner or later someone will see their chance. All reactions welcome!

I would never give them what they want. I would never put up with it. Report, report, report.

Needs to be some centralised effort. But all this goes across borders, that's the problem too. I don't think it will ever be solved. When people want to be nasty they will find ways.

If its a website, they shd b banned outright. Its only aid things like twitter that ppl can get away with anything 4 a long time. If its a forum they won't live long. If its direct email u can also bar ppl. I feel horrible 4 those victims don't misunderstand me. At the same time we shd all b able to speak our mind without getting thick skinned when we get criticised.

Trolling is a disturbing insight into the human condition. None of us, I assume, would physically assault our neighbour. But, like army officers, we may under certain circumstances be persuaded to press the release button from a seat in a fighter jet. In the same way, we would not be quick abuse others face to face, but we are quite prepared to release vitriol to a name-less, face-less person across cyber space. We are willing, even prone, to hurt others when the physical part of the confrontation has been removed, although the effects of our actions are identical. This brings us to the uncomfortable conclusion that we are prepared and ready to hurt others as long as we do not have to see direct evidence of our actions. This adds cowardice to malice.

Maybe the answer is that something in the brain does not add up that this really is human-to-human contact.

I'm on the internet as everyone. I would never start calling names. Even though I get upset with people. Trolls have no excuse.

I'm convinced that the internet is the greatest communication invention of the last 100 years. Bullying leads to depression and suicide, and I'm sure that the net around these abusers will tighten. The complication is that at the moment every website needs its own structure to deal with it, and that means a lot of work. A lot of effort & a lot of expense.

Twitter need to step up their game. It needs proper flagging and monitoring systems. As far as I know it's not there.

When these actions start to affect mental health and lead to suicide or self-harm, its needs to be established that the abuser is at the very least co-responible. Could it be that there is such a thing as psychological homicide? We have not so far defined these actions as research is ongoing.

Has anyone seen this?
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-10-20-uk-gov-changing-law-to-get-tough-on-internet-trolling

"Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said this (to the Mail on Sunday): "These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life. No-one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media. That is why we are determined to quadruple the current six-month sentence."

Then he said this: "This is a law to combat cruelty - and marks our determination to take a stand against a baying cyber-mob. We must send out a clear message - if you troll you risk being behind bars for two years."

Big fines is better than prison because prison makes a bully even worse and harder

There must be central database so trolls are not able to change sites. This is hard to do as they can buy new computers and give false identity. And stronger punishment.
