Convicted rapist Ched Evans has recently been released from prison after serving half of his 5 year sentence and his old club Sheffield United are offering him his old job back. This is a story that is getting a lot of media attention right now, especially after Judy Finnigan's comments but what are your thoughts? Have your say....

Why not i think if you commit one crime you're a prisoner for life of course its a huge crime and he should be penalised but there comes a time where a person needs a second chance or else he might as well settle that his life is over

I don't think Evans has dealt well with this one. No remorse, no statement from either him or Sheffield as far as I know. Taking that he would be a role model with a huge profile, it's not just a matter of filing back into your job. So no.

Ross, I think he should be allowed. Maybe Sheffield, maybe another team. Cases like these are not always very clear cut, I'm not making light of the verdict. But it is not a simple case of forcing a lass at gunpoint. There are personal boundaries which are crossed in certain circumstances and never should they be, but Mr Ched has had 3 years to think about it. A whole life should not be stalled on a judgment error on a single night. There may be more to this of course, but very possibly that is what this is. I agree with Judy.

Are we a civilised society? How would it be if you were a mechanic and you are convicted of a rape. You serve your time. If serving your time is not serving your time then what's the point? What's the thing about sexual crimes that you will never get off the hook? It's ridiculous to me.

A football stars are role models, they is not just working a job. The rewards are enormous, the responsibility is enormous too. People rightly feel one has to qualify.

It's not up to us to 'trust him' and that role model stuff is such utter utter tripe. Yes football players are role models but they are that because the media morphs them into role models with unsolicited exposure. It's a job for Pete's sake; not some diplomatic assignment at the United Nations. Yes it's a good job and it pays well. Anythin else?

Yes as I believe he is innocent. He did not rape her and the only wrong-doing was him cheating on his girlfriend. If you read chedevans.com I'm sure you'll all agree it was consented sex. On a football matter he is a championship quality striker and I'd welcome him back at Sheffield United. Players like Luke McCormick and Lee Hughes have killed people and they have been allowed back in the game.

Even if he was guilty he is still free to play again. He went to prison right? Th moral police are acting like Evans actually abused the whole world.

“In May 2011 at a hotel in North Wales by cheating on my partner Natasha, I hurt the woman I love with all my heart.

“Since that night, I have constantly regretted my act of infidelity and the damage that has been done on so many fronts because of it.

“The support that has been shown by Natasha, our friends and family during the trial and time spent in prison has kept me strong.

“It can’t have been an easy thing to have stood by someone who the court found guilty of such a destructive act. I will be forever grateful.

“Even though I was released from prison, I’m determined to continue the fight to clear my name and it is public knowledge that an application to refer my case back to the Court of Appeal has recently been submitted to the Criminal Case Review Commission by my lawyers. The application seeks to demonstrate that acts I engaged in on that night were consensual in nature and not rape.

“I made an incredibly foolish decision and failed all those people who trusted and believed in me, most of all Tasha and our friends.

“It is a rare and extraordinary privilege to be permitted to play professional football. Now I have served the custodial part of my sentence of two-and-a-half-years it is my hope that I’m able to return to football.

“If that is possible, then I would do so with humility having learnt a very painful lesson.

“I would like a second chance but I know not everyone would agree. I don’t believe I have a given right to play again but for any club to take me on I have learnt a valuable lesson and know that over time I could prove myself to be a positive influence, not just on the pitch but also in the community. Thank you for listening to me.”

I think the message is ok, I'm sure he had a lot of advice on it..

Should he? Ched Evans is a very good player, but he was found guilty. That is all we know for now. Footballers ARE representatives. That's just obvious. I think he should sit out for another 6 months at least. If he's able to prove his innocence then its different.

I'm conflicted on this thing. The Evans-is-innocent campaign were bullies and drove the victim (19!) from her house. You may say Evans is not connected with any of that. I'm not convinced. To elevate Evans straight off into a high paid position is sending a wrong signal.

Arguments to the effect that the woman with whom Evans had sex has been bullied by Evans' supporters, and consequently had to change her identity, should hardly figure into the debate. The supporters' actions were neither instigated or endorsed by Evans or his family; nothing of the sort has been alleged thus far. Yes, the footballer will be endlessly more lucky, prosperous and famous than the lady in question but we have to be careful that arguments are not merely a front for emotional resentment.

Some of the charity arm of Sheffield resigned. So what is the deal? Convicted and sentence served.
Q: When Evans comes out of prison, is he allowed to work?
A: Yes, of course.
Q: But not for Sheffield
A: No, not for Sheffield
Q: So he's allowed to work as long as it's not a successful & well-paid job.
A: Err..

"It is a fundamental part of the justice system in this country and society in general that a person serves the punishment which the court determines is appropriate and, providing that has been done, an individual is entitled to be released to continue with his or her life." Is this still the case in this country or no more?

I think there is a case to be made if it concerns the national team, because the players represent the country. Even if a convicted rapist has served his time, I feel this should be off limits. But i dont feel that this is a case that can be made in the case of Evans. is a player in a lower tier premier league team a national representative?

That's the point, Oracle. If he was joe blogs he could go back to the old job and none would turn a hair, BUT because he's in a lucrative profession and will enjoy popularity, he can't. It's a textbook case of double standards and profession envy.

Fair enough, but think ahead if you please. It sets a bad example. Is crime against women important? Then Evans needs an attitude adjustment. He's a convicted rapist and a rape conviction is not easily arrived at in our courts. Now Sheffield apparently have dropped Evans, which I think is the right move at least for the moment.

Are we still talking about this.......i think that it's a bit too much of a nanny state response to forbid the guy or block him.......as you say deciding on his guilt and present state is a matter for the parole board......basically all this stems from a frustration with our system... and the feeling that sentences are not strong enough

http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/jan/05/ched-evans-victim-website Very good blog. It says in part of it "His victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons but has been repeatedly identified by internet hounds, was found by a jury to have been raped aged 19 by Evans, after she bumped into Evans’s friend, Clayton McDonald, also a footballer, at 4am in a kebab shop in Rhyl.

In the taxi to the Premier Inn, which Evans had booked for his and McDonald’s night out, McDonald texted him: “I’ve got a bird.” Once inside the hotel room, McDonald was having sex with the girl when Evans arrived. The court heard that the girl was asked if Evans could “join in”. He claimed that she consented, but the jury verdict rejected that. Evans did “join in”.

His brother and friend were outside the room laughing, trying to film what was happening on their phones. While Evans was having sex with the girl, McDonald left the room. Evans left later, by the fire escape.

They then walked back to Evans’ family home in Rhyl. The teenage girl woke up at 11am, on her own in the room.

Yea apparently it came through now for him. I resent sounding like the big Ched Evans fan because I am not and i hate the offence that he committed. The sentence may well be too light as well. But I just dont feel that the public court should adopt the job of the legal court. And I feel really strongly about that.

This whole debate is so stupid in the way its done all over the country if there is a problem with the practice then the bloody FA need to make a policy about getting players back that have been convicted on rape charges because at the moment its in the hand of the clubs which is super wrong they have to deal with the shit storm of accusations and pressure and they need to keep their head around the game int that rite?

Interesting development in the Evans case, his conviction has been overturned and he will stand trial again. I'm not saying he is innocent, don't misunderstand me, and I think he acted stupidly and wrongly at the very least. Let's just see what happens.

Two things. Young women everywhere will be more reluctant to report now. They will fear not being heard. Secondly Ched Evans was not found guilty. That does not mean that his behavior was acceptable by any standard.
