Next week we have the 2015 Oscars. I'm always in film mood, but now especially. You must have a favourite, even if you don't know them all. My pick is Dances with Wolves.

Must be Gladiator. Ridley Scott single-handedly has been reviving the epic, and I don't think he gets the credit. Of course some of his movies are stupid, but I watched Exodus and I thought it was awesome. He adds a dose of realism that was absent in the old time set-pieces.

A good remake of Spartacus would be worth watching, preferably without the superman trappings.

Godfather, I'm no expert by the way, but it seems a bit subjective. Amadeus definitely is an epic, what a great movie. I still remember seeing it for the first time, with my aunt and my brother and sister and her childen, sitting way in the back of an old art deco cinema in Nottingham.

I would not class that an Epic. Good film though.

Some of the Spielberg movies like Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln. But what is actually an Epic nowadays? Is used to be a historical movie with a huge cast. I think nowadays it's just a really big budget film.

Ridley Scott and Mel Gibson are two of the greatest film makers out there. They dont make them like that these days.

How the West was Won. Maybe J Ford's best. Top three in any case.

John Ford, yes. One of the true giants is almost being forgotten today. Those monumental films still hold up, few sentimental flourishes aside. It has been a while since I had the pleasure to see one.

I liked it, an old fashioned epic romp. Not Aronofski's greatest flick but worth a watch.

I like Aronofsky's movies. Like most visionary directors it can get a bit visceral sometimes (black swan!) but golly what a talent.

What i find with old epics is that i admire them but i may not enjoy them, because i get impatient. The pacing of these 60s things is so much slowet, and they all last for 150minutss.
