Is the Premier League Overrated?

English clubs have traditionally struggled in the later stages of European competitions in recent years and the recent European matches over the last few weeks suggest that this trend may continue. In 2015 English clubs have played 3 games in the Champions League without a win and 2 out of 3 clubs in the Europa League have been knocked out. Looking at the stats, the winner of the Champions League has only been English twice in the last 9 years or 3 times in the last 14 years and the winner of the Europa League has only been English once in the last 13 years. With the amount of cash ploughed into the English football, surely these stats shouldn't be so bad? Is The Premier League really THAT good? Have Sky hyped up the League so much that armchair fans have bought into the "Best League in the World" hype that Sky continually ram down the consumer's throat every week? Does the big money in the league lead to big name players under performing? Have your Say...

I subscribe to both Sky Sports and BT Sports and watch the majority of Premier League games but I have to admit that I'm loosing interest as the product is getting worse and not worth the money it costs to watch these games. In Scotland we've always had the opinion that the game down south is overrated and I rarely see much evidence to suggest that this isn't true. Now the standard of Scottish football isn't great by any means and no where near Premier League levels but Rangers' financial troubles have lead the way for Scottish football clubs tightening their belts and playing young and home grown talent, which has lead to a much more satisfying and exciting product to watch and you can see the benefit of this with our National Team's recent improvement. I'm finding myself picking Scottish matches over Premier League matches whenever the two clash and will do again this Sunday as we have a genuine title clash for the first time in years with Celtic playing Aberdeen. Unfortunately though, it goes head to head with Liverpool vs Manchester City which is probably going to pull a superior audience in this country, which is a huge shame. So yes, I believe the Premier League is overrated and there seems to be a correlation between the amount of money ploughed into the game and the overall quality of the product on the park.

The funny thing is i find our league exciting in the matches and a good watch but compared to the top Euro teams we're just not that good. When you look at all the money in the clubs we should be knocking them out.

If you're really into one of the sides (like I'm with Chelsea) it's worth it, there is a lot of suspense and the games are fun for the most part. Yes we fall behind Spain etc but that is nothing new. That part is not going to change anytime soon,.

It's good that sometimes to be reminded that actually the emperor isn't wearing any clothes. Reality is such a humbling thing :D

The UK has the richest League in the world, and they can buy the best players. I personally feel it's the LACK of hardship that is behind the squads being so, well, average. We have some great managers and some of the bets players in the world playing in this country. At the same time they are over paid and there is just too much easy money flowing around. Everybody is in a buble and the football just isn't hungry enough.

I fail to see your point. It's easy to always point to the managers; as if they are the magicians that are to make up for a total industry. No wonder they suffer nervous breakdowns and take to the bottle.

Bump.

Shocking performance from Chelsea against 10 men for over 100 minutes tonight. More proof that the EPL is overrated?

Embarrassing. I was rolling my eyes at that dismissal (Ibrahimovic) half an hour in when it was clear that Chelsea was happy to act like babies. And in the second half they lost like babies and were booted off the Champions league like babies.

Eventually the irony will be so glaring that we'll have to start looking for another name. The ....... league. Any suggestions?

I think Beckenhauer has a good point. The League at the moment does not have what it takes to attract players like Ronaldo or Messi, and the Bundesliga has more discipline and more common sense than the spoiled British League.
