Mrs, Ms or Miss: why do forms require women reveal their marital status?

While men come under the catch-all term ‘Mr’, women are still being categorised by their age and marital status

I have often thought that. But more in a way of "isn't it funny that". But of course it's men who made the system so that women have to reveal their relationship status and they dont have to. Nice move boys! You never disappoint.

You're wrong. Ms is still a status that says 'O I dont want to tell', so people think you're probably not married or divorced. I see no reason why this would not be cancelled. With all the fab feminists in the world it should have been cancelled already.

What a fantastic post. We are still put in a corner and we play along with the whole game of profiling. We are conditioned to accept it. We have made progress I dont deny it: Several decades ago you could hardly get a rental or purchasing agreement in your own name!

I wonder if there was ever a lobby to cancel the custom altogether

Well, that's exactly the POINT everyone. This Miss/Mrs is a very useful social custom. When you as a young fellow are introduced to Miss Bundell for instance, you know 'this young lady is not married'. He does not need to enquire any further. If what you are all proposing would be implemented we are turning the clock back! Every woman will have to be bothered with questions about what her status is. Do we really want that? Miss/Mrs is a perfect social shorthand.

And what about every man? Will he have to be bothered with questions about what his status is?

Ehm Ehlers sort of MISSed that point. Its up to the boys to pick brides - they can all sit on the side and wait!

Times change I would not go back to yesterdays social customs whether arranged marriage or other customs. I always put Ms down when I fill any form and I dont care what people think.

Human nature shall not change my dear friends. The boys will still be after the girls and will still be pursuing them and the girls will look out for signs from the men. You all are just making it a little bit more complicated by wanting to strip society from a practical custom. I assume nobody here is in the corridors of power so it matters little.

Probably a reduction to Mrs and Ms might be on point. You do have to keep in mind that many women may voluntarily want to convey that they are married.
