Does the UK Need Electoral Reform?

The smaller parties like the Greens and UKIP are uniting in a push for UK electoral reform. Reform events are being held across the country. Where do you stand? Is change required or is the old system a safeguard against a splintered parliament?

I copy from a recent article:
To obtain one MP, the Conservatives needed 34,384 votes while for the same outcome Ukip needed 3,881,129.

The SNP (Scottish National Party) got fewer than half of the votes of Ukip but this did not mean that Ukip got more MPs, it got just one – while the SNP got 56.

The Liberal Democrats needed to get eight times as many votes as the Conservatives to obtain the same result of one MP.

Clearly this is wrong and proportional representation (PR) would be better.

Yes it does. It would not be in the interest of the party I support but the present electoral map needs revising.

Reform with a small r, in other words. NOt a change of system but rather some fine tuning. Am I understanding you right?

I system is very helpful because of that reason…….we have a functional parliament instead of total confusion with 10 different parties competing…….but it needs tweaking now…when you look at the stats in the left column there is no excuse…..so stay with first past the post but adjust the constituencies somewhat

Not really. I actually think the larger parties have the best policies. They are big for a reason, they have the best research and policy people. The smaller parties latch onto one issue but they don't have the balance and they can't really run the country.

If the country had proportional representation we would still have a tory government right now. Even in an extreme election like this it would make no real difference in the make up of the government.

I would say that the smaller parties are small for a reason, often enough. I generalise but `I think there's truth to it. Either the small parties don't have the resolve to carry out their convictions or their economic plan does not really hold up to scrutiny or the reps of the party just do not have the skill and caliber that is required of heads of state. I have seen this with the Green Party, with UKIP and to a lesser extend with the LibDems.
