EU Referendum - Should EU Immigrants Be Allowed to Vote?

The Government want to allow immigrants from Ireland, Malta, Cyprus and the Commonwealth countries to vote in the EU referendum but not immigrants from the rest of the EU meaning over 1.5 million people living in the UK will not get a say. In your opinion, is this right or wrong?

Of course they should, these are people that live, work and pay tax in the UK and this decision affects them just as much, if not more so than the rest of us. They live in a democratic country and therefore should be given the right to vote and have their voice heard on a decision as big as this.

Is there some sort of duration stay after immigrants from Central European countries can vote? If there isn't this is totally wrong.

Of course they should. They invest their life and labour into the place.

We all knew that they would try to limit who can vote; after all it's the eurosceptic wing in the Conservative party that has been pushing this forward.

It's totally stupid and will be seen for what it is: a cynical move to limit the yes vote and it will just bring resentment.

The biggest question about the EU is about immigration. So to start with excluding the immigrants from the referendum they are starting it with a bias.

This makes no sense if Commonwealth citizens can vote, what business this is of temporary residents from Australia or Kenya I'm not sure. But I do see an advantage that UKIP will cry foul a referendum is won with EU citizens voting. And will never go away. I take it overseas Brits will be allowed to vote?

If you live in the EU and contribute socially, economically or even just by being here... You should be allowed a say in decisions that will effect you!

That this is even a question is so weird. It shows fundamental paranoia and fear that the government won't even allow people to voice an opinion about their own damn future. No, wait sit down. Let us vote for you. That's the sort of country you work for after all. I'm embarrassed.

I think that would show confidence in the strength of the argument, and in the quality of our democracy.

I can understand the reasoning behind that. The immigrants in question have a vested interest to have the UK stay in the EU. But this is a time for the hosting nation to decide on the issue. My vote would be stay by the way, just as the immigrants in question would be likely to vote.

Out of curiosity, do you think English, Welsh and Northern Irish people living in Scotland shouldn't have been allowed to vote in the Scottish Referendum?

I would have no problem if they would not have been able to vote in it. Because of the very nature of one community, one locality deciding on its own future it does not seem discriminatory for that community to reserve the vote to those who are native to it. All within reason though, along with the point that Charlie made, if people have been resident for 7 or more years they should be considered as part of their new locale.

That's fair enough then but I can imagine it wouldn't have been taken as well as that with many other people south of the border and those people from the rest of the UK living in Scotland had it happened that way.

No it would not at all go down well, especially because the voters would have been of the same nationality at the time of voting.

If Poland or Solvakia were to decide on their EU membership I would not expect to hav e a vote in the matter even if I resided within their borders.

No, we would not get a chance to vote in their country if it came to a referendum like that.

Not necessarily, I'm going to go with no. I think Philip Davies is right. This is a weighty question for Britain and only British citizens should have a say – not other EU nationals who could be biased in favour of Brussels.
