One of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology is the Nature vs Nurture debate. Where do you stand? Have your say...
Nature is the biggest to my mind and experience.

Difficult one this. Putting it like that I'm tempted to go with nature. It's a philosophical argument and I agree with LMNOP's point. So I have to qualify. For a person to be born and grow up in the context of their environment, I think that nature is the biggest determining factor of who they finally become. Science shows that large chunks of our character and social tendencies are pre-determined, and that even in areas where people are convinced that they are making their own choices, it's actually their DNA coding that speaks loudest.

Ok i get it. I would say Nature.

Nurture comes from nature. The education tools that we develop are ultimately a fruit of our natural resources. So Nature always has to be more powerful than nurture.

I saw a doc about 2 twins that had not met in decades. Going by how much they thought and acted the same, the answer is definitely nature.

No, it's just talking about traits, behaviour, intelligence, whatever makes up the human personality, right?

Yeah, it's regarding what has the biggest effect on the personality traits and behaviour that a person develops, is it something that's just naturally passed on in our DNA or are they influenced by their surroundings and environment. Sorry, I really didn't make it clear enough in the original post and just wrongly assumed people would know what I was referring to! Fail!

Your environment determines a lot, it can either make you a caveman or a nobel prize winning scientist. Take a child and give him love knowledge and self esteem and he will transform in front of your very eyes. So I'm going with nurture.

So would I.....the law of 10.000 hours......take a person with all the talent and no application...against a diligent person of average talent....and you know who will win every time.

So you believe in that part of the human mind that seeks to develop itself. That's still nature.

What I mean is if you take 2 twins at birth.....put one in a garden shed and the other in school for 20 years....you won't even know that those two were family......so nurture is the most powerful ingredient in people forming identity....and it's not only about developing yourself.....most people are coached and guided into development....hence nurture.
NURTURE OF COURSE. ABOUT THE TWINS ARGUMENT, IF YOU ADOPT SOMEONE FROM A POOR COUNTRY & RAISE THEM IN A RICH COUNTRY AND EDUCATE THEM THEY GROW LIKE ANYONE ELSE THERE. SO NURTURE IS THE MAIN THING ALWAYS.
