What is Russia up to with Syria?

The situation, now in October 2015, is getting more bizarre. Russia is hitting the forces opposing Isis in Syria rather than Isis groups themselves. I together with many others am worried what the Russian agenda really is, how determined they are, and how comprehensive their strategy is. What do you think?

They target militants, but only non-Isis ones. They have a sick sense of humor.

Russia's strikes, widely reported as defying American operations in Syria, are conducted at the express invitation of Assad and therefore firmly within international law, unlike some of the Western strikes.

I wonder how many people know that Assad and Russia have been allies for many years, even Russia's strongest allies in the middle east. All this is not that huge a surprise.

I think what Putin is saying in all this is clear nuff.

A The west is responsible for Isis and for the mess in Syria and Iraq. Who can argue with that.
B Russia will defend its ally Assad.
C Putin is not going to be side lined or happy to tag along as the West's little helper.
D Russia has a bold strategy to establish themselves as a major international player.

I am NOT a supporter of Russian policy before you want to knock me out cold, but I'm not a supporter of American/UK policy either.

Russia has more reason to for military action in Syria than America, as they go back decades and it's a mutual relationship, but Russia is not straightforward. They never show their cards, think about the Ukraine.

I agree that Russia sees ISIS as an enemy, their strategy was probably impacted by their agenda in Syria. They don't want Isis to succeed, especially now they have their eyes on Afganistan.

Now Isis shot that Russian plane down they say. So yea Russia is making Isis really nervous and they are not secretly supporting Isis. I don't like Russian politics at all but here they seem to be more on the ball than the rest of us.

The West and Russia will have to work together to see this work. When last did Russia and America fight a conmon enemy? It's an uncomfortable thought.

Russia now voted for the latest UN resolution to fight Isis. I think the plane influenced them a bit. It's good news really. The only area now where Russia and the US are still at odds is on the question whether Assad should stay or go.
