The Future of Warfare: State Sponsored Hacking

To me this is the real danger. Climate change, Middle East Wars, it's all important. But for the last 5 years, the world's think tanks have been concerned with dangers well beyond that. Through a hack attack, our drinking water can be flooded with chloride, or our weapons systems can be manipulated to turn on ourselves. My worry is that when International tension will rise to boiling point, hackers will be there with solutions. Discuss.

I hear they target UK and US but they are practicing on Canada. I would not have any kids really even if I wanted a family. This is no world to drop your kids into.

I'm afraid I have to agree. Of course every generation looks with trepidation at the current potential for destruction and disaster, but if the same zeal is applied to cyber warfare that is evidenced in the various attacks we hear of, then we have reason to be, ehm, concerned. Many of the terror attacks are crude, however horrible and deadly and damaging they are. But young radicalsed young people are cyber savvy. Hopefully we can keep ahead of terror efforts by sophisticated security and anti viral programs, but we need to be streets ahead, we need to be miles ahead, more than ever before.

People started to talk when twitter had some sort of fluke warning last year about a state sponsored hack. It was just hype or somebody having a laugh. I don't think some rogue nation can bust our security systems, we have the advantage that we actually created those systems. So my answer is that yea you have to be aware but its mostly just hype / speculated.

You will think again when you hear of all the foiled plots and how far they get with these attempts. All the techie crew seem to be worried about it and saying nobody is worried enough. Are you thinking the same thing aboyt terror plots in general?

Did this story just take a turn? Trump:

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," Mr Trump said on Wednesday. "I think you'll be rewarded mightily by our press." The emails would contain some "beauties", he said.

His appeal comes as Russia stands accused of hacking emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for Mr Trump's benefit. Both Russia and Mr Trump deny the allegation.

"This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent," Jake Sullivan, Mrs Clinton's senior policy adviser, said.

This is more or less about Stuxnet, one of the many programs out there, but it gives a lot of mostly reliable data and background.

Russia is spending about 250 million annually in employing hackers. They are getting better at it constantly, I don't think I have to tell you. It seems to be that this is the sort of game where the unscrupulous win and the principled lose, unless they work 3 times as hard. And that they don't do, at least so far. Hacking for intelligence has now taking precedence for obvious reasons. I think the ultimate design is to refine intelligence so far that warfare becomes unnecessary. He who wins the information war has won the battle.

All governments will be doing it in the end. It's much cheaper than weapons and more effective because you are working from the inside out instead of from the outside.
