Rio Success Funded by Lottery. Money Well Spent?

As you will probably noticed, Team GB athletes kept thanking the National Lottery every time they win a medal and that's because since London 2012 alone, our athletics program has received £274m in funded and half as much more from the Treasury in grants.

Do you find the success of Team GB at the Olympics worth that large amount of funding or is this money that could be spent better elsewhere on different areas of the country? Join the debate:

Definitely. The money is a medal grab, but who wants to see Britain embarrassed in the Olympics like we're embarrassed n other sports (let's nit talk about that one). This year far exceeded expectations and long may it continue. Funding turned British Olympic performance around.

I wonder how long we can keep pushing further. Will Tokyo beat then Rio tally?

I know lottery money goes to a lot of worthy causes. This stands as a national worthy cause, certainly I think there would be no consensus to change it.

The only downside is that being a Olympic champion doesnt mean as much anymore. The athletes still are working harder than ever before but they get back less because now there are 40 champions instead of a handful. You can only have so many of them in the limelight.

Okay fair enough but what's the alternative for the surplus winners? Not being a winner at all? It's up to every athlete to take their success to a another level.

Money that now goes to the Olympics no longer is going to a number of worthy charities. These are the forgotten party in this whole story. So I say give it back to them, and let corporate sponsors take care of the training of the Olympic athletes.

That is not really true. National lottery spending stats: Health 10%, Education 10% Environment 10% Charity 10% Sports 20% Arts 20% Heritage 20%

Those figures I believe are recent. That's just my point. Did not more money go to charity in previous years?
