Since the recent acquisition of Whatsapp by Facebook, could this potentially be the rebirth of Blackberry and their unique Blackberry Messenger? What are your thoughts?

Will be exciting to watch. They're bringing their new phone out, forget now what it's called, the new touchscreen one..and they'll be a player for sure, Heard they're going into voice.

The new phone they are launching this year I believe is the Blackberry Q20. If there are continuous problems with Whatsapp I have a feeling consumers will potentially use other social networking sites. However the BBM service is available on iPhone's and Android devices so not sure what or how Blackberry will do to take advantage of this.

They launched on android and iphone far too late to take advantage... Users are always willing to put up with a certain amount of issues.

I don't think so.... Blackberry messenger made a crucial mistake very early on by keeping BBM blackberry device specific. If they had branched out and made it avialable on android/iphone/windows early on they could have had a much higher market share of the sector.

Who has a blackberry now? That 13 year old kid on the bus that got it second hand....

Whatsapp was acquired for $19B purely for it's user base, it's rapid growth and market share of the sector. There's no way BBM could replicate that now, it's far too late in the game.

I totally agree with you, Blackberry have taken far too long to invest in the Smartphone industry hence why they have lost a huge customer base, this is demonstrated by their main users as you mentioned "13 year olds" well teenagers. However there have been rumors of Blackberry using the Android operating system this could potentially pave the way for a Blackberry rebirth.
